Tax Return Redaction

Redact a tax return, W-2, or 1099 before you share it

Proof of income for a landlord, lender, or agency should not mean handing over your SSN, bank account, and full earnings. RedactVault redacts a Form 1040, W-2, 1099, or Schedule C in your browser — the file is processed on your device and is not sent to RedactVault servers for redaction.

Free to start. No subscription required to redact a single tax form.

What gets caught

The details a tax form exposes

Opening a tax form turns on detection tuned for income paperwork — SSN and ITIN, employer/payer EIN, refund account and routing numbers, names, addresses, dates, and income amounts are highlighted automatically for your review.

Social Security & tax IDs

SSN and ITIN for you and any dependents, plus the employer/payer EIN printed on a W-2 or 1099.

Refund direct-deposit details

Bank account and routing numbers entered for a refund deposit, and any card or IBAN values.

Wages, income & withholding

Wage, income, and withholding amounts from a W-2, 1099, or Schedule C that reveal more than a landlord or lender needs.

Employer & payer details

Company names and identifiers of the employer or payer who issued the form.

Name & home address

Your name and address block on Form 1040, W-2, or 1099 — and a spouse or dependent where present.

Dates

Date of birth, tax year, and signing dates that can identify a person alongside the other fields.

Detection highlights common tax and financial identifiers, but review the rest yourself before exporting: preparer notes, unusual line items, anything specific to your form, and the whole document if it is a scan or phone photo. You can black these out in the same editor.

How it works

Three steps, all in your browser

1

Open the tax form in your browser

Select your PDF, photo, or scan of a 1040, W-2, or 1099. It is processed locally by your browser and is not sent to RedactVault servers for redaction.

2

Review the highlighted details

RedactVault highlights SSN/ITIN, employer/payer EIN, account and routing numbers, names, addresses, dates, and amounts. You confirm, add, or remove boxes before anything is final.

3

Export a flattened copy

Export a redacted file with the marked values removed and metadata stripped — proof of income you can hand to a landlord, lender, or agency.

Why browser-local matters

Your tax return does not leave your device to be redacted

Most online redaction tools transfer your file to a server first. RedactVault runs the redaction in your browser, so the document content is not sent to RedactVault servers for redaction. Account, billing, and support data are still handled server-side like any normal web app.

Before you send it

Always review the redacted copy before sharing. Automatic detection helps you find common values but is not guaranteed to catch everything. Tax forms are often shared as scans or phone photos — those rely on text recognition (English-focused) and need a careful visual check, since image-based exports cannot be verified by re-reading a text layer. Drawing a black box in a phone markup app does not remove the text underneath; use a real redaction so the values are actually gone.

How the processing works

Check the security and accuracy details

Read how RedactVault processes documents locally and where its detection limits are, so you know exactly what the tool does and does not do before trusting it with a tax return.
